Spousal Support Under Michigan Laws

Spousal support is financial assistance paid from one former spouse to another. Alimony is an amount of money one spouse must pay to the other after a divorce to meet the needs of the more dependent spouse and permit that spouse to become self-supporting.

Many people ask us – What is the Law in Michigan regarding spousal support (alimony)? How does the Court decide how much to award? This decision is made on a case-by-case basis, and a judge-by-judge basis.

The court is more likely to award spousal support when the marriage has lasted a long time, there is a large disparity in the incomes of both parties, one spouse helped put the other through college or had to for-go a career to stay home and raise children. The court is not likely to award spousal support when the marriage was relatively short, or both parties are employed and earn around the same income.

If you want to discuss spousal support with our skilled divorce and spousal support attorneys, call or e-mail my law firm today.
